Welcome back! This is the LSU Round-Up, where I give you the latest news on your former Bayou Bengals.
In this edition, we have a former LSU running back on the comeback trail, our favorite golfer giving back as usual and all the comings-and-goings from opening week in the major leagues.
Stevan Ridley, RB, New York Jets: Coming off an ACL tear five months ago. Ridley has a shot at redemption as the Jets signed the former LSU ball carrier to a 1-year contract. Ridley will miss parts of training camp but has the potential to get some carries in Chan Gailey’s offense. He will be competing against Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell but don’t count out Ridley, who has a 1,000 yard season under his belt- something Ivory and Powell can’t say.
According to Ridley’s agent, “He’s excited for the opportunity and his rehab is going strong at this point.”
David Toms, Golfer– It’s time for the Masters! So that means it’s time for David Toms’ annual Masters Pool.
Here’s how it works: Select one golfer from Group A, two golfers from Group B, three golfers from Group C and two golfers from Group D for a total of eight golfers. The team with the highest cumulative money earnings from the tournament is the winner. Cost is $100 and all of the proceeds benefit the David Toms Foundation so everyone wins. Sign up now right here!
Louis Coleman, Pitcher, Royals Organization– The Kansas City Royals waived Coleman, he cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Omaha. The Royals have one of the deepest bullpens in all of baseball, and Ned Yost said the former LSU ace “came in with a lot of competition and held his own” in spring training.
Kevin Gausman, P, Baltimore Orioles: Gausman may not have landed a spot on the roster as a starting pitcher but is adapting as a reliever. In his first appearance out the bullpen, Gausman struck out 4 batters and picked up the win in 2 1/3 innings. Gausman may go back to a starter at some point this season but will be given a chance to prove his worth as a long reliever.
Anthony Ranaudo, Pitcher, Rangers organization: The Rangers optioned Ranaudo to Triple-A Round Rock. Like Coleman, it was a bad scenario. He was acquired from the Red Sox but was slowed by some elbow pain and never caught up to the other starters. No fear, Ranaudo is in the Rangers long term plans and will be back up to the majors in no time.
Aaron Hill, 2B, Arizona Diamondbacks– This guy is a steady as they come. Hill is off to a hot start. Entering last night, Hill was 3-8 for a .375 average.
DJ LeMahieu, 2B, Colorado Rockies: Like Hill, this second baseman is off to a scorching start. LeMahieu has began 2015 going 4-9 for a .444 average and you know he always has the skills to flash the leather in the infield.
Charlie Furbush, Pitcher, Seattle Mariners– Furbush may have an awkward pitching motion but the results work. Last year, Furbush appeared in 67 games for a strong Mariners squad and in his first action of 2015 picked up where he left off. The specialist only needed six pitches to do his part in the bullpen to get the out in the season opener.
If you didn’t see your favorite LSU alum, don’t worry everyone will get their shine right here on AGSH.
